15 People Killed by Boko Haram
On Sunday July 5th a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a church in the Nigerian town of Potiskum. This attack resulted in the death of the church’s Priest was among the victims of the attack at the Redeemed Christian Church of God
. No one has claimed responsibility for this attack, but the attack is similar to other attacks made by the Boko Haram, an Islamic militant group.
One blast happened near the Yan-Taya mosque. It happened during a sermon about the Holy Month of Ramadan. Another blast happened at Bauchi Road, a busy place where many Muslim families reside.
The City of Jos sits right between the Northern Muslim side, and the Christian southern side. In the Boko Haram’s minds making it the ideal target for an attack of this nature.
Potiskum has faced several attacks by this militant group. This year alone the Boko Haram has attacked Potiskum on at least four separate occasions. In January three people were killed and 43 were injured when the group bombed a phone store. The next week 17 were killed and 27 were injured by an attack at a bus station. In May a gunman also attacked a college's Business and Administrative Studies building.
As well as schools and government build the Boko Haram has also been know to target churches. Attacks on churches in June 2013 left more than 50 people dead. Also, attacks in November of 2011 had a string of 11 churches attacked. The U.S continues to condemn the attacks by the Boko Haram, and is lending it assistance to Nigerian Officials to help build a defense against the threat posed by the Boko Haram.
